Vintage 1940s Coat Black Wool Princess Style Women’s Size L

Vintage 1940s Coat Black Wool Princess Style Women’s Size L

$395.00

This striking vintage 1940s coat is crafted from black wool and features dramatic sculptural lapels trimmed in black velvet with decorative appliqué detailing. The silhouette is strongly architectural through the shoulders and upper body, with a softly flared skirt and a very full hemline, creating fluid movement when worn, referred to as “Princess Style”.
The coat has padded shoulders, a two-button front design, closing with a single functional button at the waist; the second button is decorative, reinforcing the asymmetrical visual balance of the lapels. Interior construction shows extensive hand-finished work, including hand-sewn seam finishes and pleated lining panels, consistent with mid-century tailoring practices.
Maker: no label, but obviously expertly made, probably by a tailor or seamstress
Material: Wool, trimmed in velvet.
Lining: Fully lined; lining shows hand-pleated and hand-finished construction details.
Sizing: The size tag is absent. Based on the measurements and allowing appropriate ease for a tailored 1940s coat (approximately 6" at the bust for movement), this coat would best fit a modern women’s large, but please refer to the measurements below for best fit:
Shoulders: 19" across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 24 1/2" from shoulder seam
Sleeve inseam: 17"
Bust: 48" around, 24" pit-to-pit
Waist: 38" around
Hips: 45"–46" around
Hemline: 109" around
Overall length: 46 1/2", measured flat at the back from the neck seam
The generous hem sweep and tailored upper body are typical of period coats designed to be worn over structured garments.
Condition:  In very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, staining, soiling or odour - surprisingly well preserved for a coat of this age
These is a wonderful example of a ladies’ vintage 1940s coat - unusual to find this large size!
