This is a very nice quality black brushed silk top hat dating to the 1940s that belonged to a very influential Canadian lawyer. Brushed silk was developed to replicate the look of beaver fur. This hat was sold by Gerald Preston of 109 Sparks St, Ottawa - Gerald Preston was at that location between 1939 and 1948, so it is easy to date the hat to that time period. The hat was made in England by Christy’s of London, well known for making quality hats. The hat has a size label that reads “6 3/4” - it measures 21” around the sweatband, and 7 1/2” by 6” across the opening. The crown has a height of 5 1/4” and is wrapped around its base with a felt wool band.
The hat is in excellent condition, very clean, and obviously well cared for over the years. It comes with its original box, however, the box has wear, soiling and moisture damage, but it did do its job of protecting the hat.
This is a wonderful hat for a formal occasion......
