Vintage 1930s Black Dress Coat with Soutache Size M

Vintage 1930s Black Dress Coat with Soutache Size M

$295.00

This 1930s black dress coat likely formed part of a two-piece ensemble originally paired with a matching dress. It is beautifully tailored in a medium-weight crepe fabric and designed with a fitted bodice and flared skirt. The coat fastens down the open front with 17 covered buttons extending from the neckline to the hip area.  It is fully lined in silk crepe.

The front and back panels feature gorgeous soutache embroidery arranged in stylized swirling motifs, adding Art Deco-era texture and visual depth. A braided cord tie with tassels cinches the waist for shape, while the high neckline and long sleeves create a modest, graceful silhouette typical of early-to-mid-1930s day and theatre attire.

Sizing:  Although unmarked as to size, this 1930s black dress coat should fit a size medium, but please rely on the following measurements for fit (taken flat):

Shoulders: 16” across seam to seam

Sleeves: 22” from shoulder seam

Sleeve inseam: 16”

Bust: 40”

Waist: 38” uncinched (meant to be adjusted with tasseled cords)

Length: 42” at centre back

Material: Medium-weight wool crepe
Origin: Austrian - this belonged to a Viennese opera singer

Condition: Very good overall. One small hole noted to the upper right sleeve to the back side (see last close-up photo). Otherwise, no other wear, tear, soiling, staining or odour - presents beautifully.

This is an understated 1930s black dress coat with striking soutache detailing—sure to be noticed!
