Vintage 1905 Howard Chandler Christy Drawings in Black and White Art Portfolio Book
This is an oversized portfolio style volume featuring the work of celebrated American illustrator Howard Chandler Christy, published in 1913 by The Review of Reviews Company, New York. This collection presents full page black and white reproductions of Christy’s illustrations, including many examples of the famous “Christy Girl,” regarded as the successor to Charles Dana Gibson’s Gibson Girl.
The book contains a wide range of imagery including elegant Edwardian society women, romantic and theatrical scenes, genre subjects, and a section of military illustrations related to the Spanish-American War and frontier subjects. The artwork captures the transition from the late Victorian era into the Edwardian period and showcases Christy’s fluid line work and atmospheric illustration style.
The volume is particularly impressive for its large format presentation, with each illustration occupying a full page. Titles include American Beauty, A Winning Hand, The Steamboat Orchestra, Dreaming of the Future, First Cavalry at Guasimas, Charge of a Regiment of Volunteers, and many others.
The book retains a 1913 presentation inscription reading: “With the compliments of the season W. K. Dalgarno 1913.”
