Vintage 100% Cashmere Overcoat Berwin & Berwin for Harrods Made in England Sz L
This is a men’s vintage 100% cashmere overcoat made in England by Berwin & Berwin, tailors established in 1885, and retailed by Harrods, Knightsbridge. The coat reflects classic British tailoring, intended as a formal cold-weather overcoat.
The design features a single-breasted front secured closed by three hidden buttons, padded shoulders, and notched lapels. The length falls well below the knee, consistent with mid- to late-20th-century English overcoat styling. The exterior is a deep purply navy tone, woven in fine cashmere with a smooth, dense hand and good thickness.
The interior is fully lined in a dark blue satin viscose lining, with a back vent for ease of movement. Labels confirm both the Harrods retail origin and the English manufacture, along with a 100% cashmere content tag.
Label reads: Made in England for Harrods, Knightsbridge by Berwin & Berwin – Tailors Since 1885.
Date of manufacture: Most likely 1970s, possibly 1980s
Sizing: Size 44 is indicated, but this may be a little snug, especially if wearing a jacket underneath, so perhaps a US size 42 would be more appropriate.
Please refer to the measurements below, taken with the garment laid flat and doubled where appropriate.
Shoulders: 19 1/2” across shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeves: 24” from shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve inseam: 16”
Chest: 47” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 42” around
Hips: 46” around
Overall length: 44”, measured flat at the back from the neck seam
Please compare these measurements to a similar coat for best fit.
Condition: This vintage 100% cashmere overcoat is in very good condition except that the right cuff is a little loose, so would require a few stitches to keep it properly in place. Possibly the sleeves were shortened, but there is fabric inside the cuff should you need to lengthen them Otherwise, there is no pronounced wear, tear, soiling, staining or odour to the coat, but it would benefit from a professional pressing.
The cashmere is of excellent quality, very soft and thicker than what they produce today. Very nice English tailoring - with some work on the cuff and a pressing, this will be a coat to treasure for years to come….
