Vintage 100% Angora Coat Chester Barrie Overcoat Size L
Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is a vintage 100% angora coat made in England by Chester Barrie for Brisson & Brisson of Montreal.
The fabric on this vintage 100% angora coat is thick, extremely soft and in black. This vintage 100% angora coat is made in a classic style with higher set notched lapels, six button double breasted closure, slightly padded shoulders and flapped side pockets. The back has a deep centre box pleat with shorter box pleats to either side - a decorative belt crosses the waist area. The coat is fully lined in charcoal viscose. Difficult to date precisely, but I would think 1980s-1990s era.
Label: Chester Barrie Hand Tailored In England for Brisson & Brisson Montreal CA 04023. The neck loop on this vintage 100% angora coat reads “Made in England”. Chester Barrie was a “semi-bespoke” tailor founded in 1935 and located at 19 Savile Row. They had a factory in Crewe that produced suits and coats that would be then custom tailored for clients. Austin Reed acquired the business in 1978. Brisson & Brisson was an exclusive men’s clothing boutique located in Montreal that closed some 20 years ago. It was favoured by the Canadian business and political elite and Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau was a regular customer there. Anything that you bought at Brisson & Brisson was of exceptional quality.
Fabric label: 100% Angora. A second label reads “Dry Clean Only Lining 100% Viscose”.
Manufacturer’s label: identifies this vintage 100% angora coat as “Bentley” in “Blk”
Sizing: The sizing on the manufacturer’s label on this vintage 100% angora coat reads “42 Reg 106 cm Full/Cuff”- Although this should fit a size large, please take the thickness of the fabric and the cut of the garment into consideration, as well as if you are intending on wearing a jacket underneath:
Shoulders: 21” across seam to seam
Sleeves: 25 1/2” from shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17 1/4” long
Chest: 50” around, taken under the arms
Overall length: 47“, measured flat at the back from the neck seam
Condition: Although pre-owned, this vintage 100% angora coat is in very clean condition - it’s obvious that it saw very little use. There is one short area at the neck seam that requires stitching, a very minor repair (see last close-up photo). The nappe (finish) is quite luxurious.
This is a wonderful English made vintage 100% angora coat, quality British tailoring!
