Signed photograph of Douglas Haig Jan Smuts and H T Lukin in frame

Signed Photograph of Douglas Haig, Jan Smuts & H.T. Lukin – Cape Town Studio Portrait c.1918–1921

$1,200.00

This is an original early 20th century photographic portrait depicting Field Marshal Douglas Haig, General Jan Smuts, and General Henry Timson Lukin, photographed together in Cape Town and signed by each individual on the original mount.

The photograph shows Haig and Lukin in full military uniform with medal ribbons, while Smuts appears in civilian dress, reflecting his dual role as a military leader and statesman. Based on the uniforms, presentation, and historical context, the image was likely taken in the immediate post-First World War period, circa 1918 to early 1920s, rather than during the Boer War era.

The mount bears three original ink signatures, each corresponding to the figures depicted. The lower margin also includes the photographer’s imprint, reading “Eilgcome (?) & Co., 66 Hope Street, Cape Town,” indicating a professional photographic studio operating in Cape Town during the early 20th century. The exact reading of the studio name remains uncertain due to the stylized script.

This type of signed presentation photograph was typically produced in limited numbers for official or commemorative purposes and is considerably less common than single-signature material.
