This is a wonderful designer vintage 1970s era peasant look blue and black check blouse & skirt ensemble made in France by Yves Saint Laurent Paris. The set came from an estate where there were hundreds of pieces of Parisian designer clothing, much of it unused. It appears to maybe be a sample due to the labels (see close-up photos of labels). This ensemble looks to me to be an "opulent peasant" look - Saint Laurent introduced the peasant look in 1976. The blouse has a Russian look to the neckline, accented in black velvet and buttoning on the side. The sleeves are roomy at the upper arm and cinched at the cuff with, again, in black velvet. The blouse is made with some length, and I have posed it tucked into the skirt as well as out of the skirt, cinched with a sash belt that I am including, but you probably could come up with your own more appropriate belt. The skirt is long and accented with ruffles. The fabric is quite glittery - this is a wonderful holiday season ensemble.
Label: Yves Saint Laurent Paris Tricot Made in France. The sample label on the jacket reads “Style: 03A18122 Size 38 Color: 11”. There is “350” written in felt on the jacket label and “500” written on the skirt label, probably prices, but I’m unsure as to which currency. No matter what, this was probably a quite expensive outfit for its time.
Material: Content label reads “85% Cotton / 15% Metallic”
Sizing: The blouse has size 38 label while the skirt has a size 36 label - these are vintage French sizes, so please rely on the following measurements for fit, taking the style of the garment into consideration:
Shoulders: 15" across from shoulder seam to shoulder seam
Sleeves: 23 1/2" from shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 18 1/2“
Bust: 44" around, but meant to hang somewhat loosely
Waist: 46”, but meant to be cinched
Overall length: 25", measured flat
Waist: 25 1/2“
Hips: 48" around, but meant to hang loosely
Length: 41“ long, measured flat
It's in excellent condition - very clean and like much of the items from the estate, it looks like it saw no use. The only issue is that the button is missing from one of the cuffs, fairly minor as these are generic black plastic buttons that shouldn’t be difficult to replace. This has been well kept and stored over the years.
This is a striking blouse and skirt ensemble by one of the greatest Parisian couturiers, a fabulous piece that is sure to be noticed.
