Art Deco La Marquise de Sévigné Paris Chocolate Basket French Box Rare
This is a rare Art Deco–era French woven straw and raffia lidded basket, originally produced for the luxury Paris chocolatier La Marquise de Sévigné, founded in 1898. The underside retains the original black-and-white label reading “La Marquise de Sévigné – Paris.”
The basket is constructed in tightly wrapped concentric coils of dyed blue, olive-green, and natural straw/raffia, topped with a geometric square handle featuring diagonal banding—an unmistakably Deco motif. These colour combinations and the stepped, tiered form mirror 1920s–30s French decorative style, which favoured geometry and richly dyed natural fibres.
I assume that baskets of this type were used by Sévigné as gift presentation boxes during the interwar period, most likely for luxury assortments of chocolates. Surviving examples are extremely scarce, and this design—particularly with its original lid and intact maker’s label —appears to be a rare, possibly custom or limited-production piece.
Measurements:
• Diameter: 7 1/4"
• Height: 3 3/4" to top of handle
Condition: In very good condition with expected age-related wear to the dyed raffia and some small breaks, mainly on the lid’s coils. In addition, there is a small chip to the wood handle edge (see last photo). Structurally sound and visually striking, with no missing sections. The original enamel maker’s label is intact, a testament to the careful preservation of the piece.
A beautiful and unusual decorative object—ideal for collectors of Art Deco, French luxury packaging or La Marquise de Sévigné memorabilia….
