This is a wonderful large oil and vinegar set made in Gouda, Holland by PZH (Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland). PZH is responsible for the type of pottery that has come to be identified as Gouda, having invented a process to produce matte glazed pottery called the Rhodian process. They introduced these abstract floral patterns circa 1910 and continued to evolve the style of decoration in keeping with the Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts and Art Deco styles as they became popular. This set is decorated in the art deco style and would date to the 1920s. One of the pieces is made in a squat indented shape with round stopper while the other is made in a tall cylindrical shape with a handle and a crown-like stopper. Each is signed Ebro Holland with the house logo used by PZH. The squat piece measures 9 in height to the top of the stopper and has a diameter of about 5 while the taller piece measures 11 3/4 in height with a diameter of about 4 at its widest. Together, they weigh 3 lbs. They are in very good condition with no chips, cracks or wear - the only defect is a repair to the cork on the taller piece (see close-up photo), very minor.
This is a wonderful pair - Gouda sets often are separated so this is a very nice pair to find in this very nice condition. Unusual shapes - I personally havent seen a large oil and vinegar like this before, so great additions to a Gouda collection or just as beautiful table accents!
