Antique Wm Notman & Son Photograph in Art Nouveau Swivel Photo Frame

Brand Etsy

This is a photo of two young sisters that is signed Notman & Son. The photo is under glass in its original wood swivel frame - the frame is made in a late art nouveau style. William Notman photographed members of Montreal society during the 19th century, and his photos are historical testimonials to the history of Montreal. Photos that are signed Notman & Son date from 1882 onwards when Williams son Willam McFarlane Notman partnered with his father - William Senior died in 1891. From the dress and general appearance of the girls, I would date the photo to the 1920s, but it is possible that the frame is a little older. This photo measures 5 5/8 by 7 5/8 while the frame measures 11 in height and 10 1/2 by 2 1/2 across its base. It is in very good condition - the frame has some loss of gold paint to one end of the base and the backing board is scuffed (see last close-up photos), but this is fairly minor damage that can be easily touched up in the case of the gold paint, and turned around or replaced in the case of the backing board.
Nice acquisition whether a Notman collector or you simply want a lovely picture frame!
