Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is a hand-crafted antique Indian papier-mâché painted box, dating to the early 20th century, likely from the Kashmir or Rajasthan areas of India. The chest measures 11 3/4" in height and 9 3/4" square.
The exterior is painted in a rich red ground and decorated with traditional motifs including horse riders, deer, and elephants, all framed by dotted and floral borders. The decoration is rendered in black and yellow paint in a style associated with late 19th to early 20th century papier-mâché work.
This antique Indian papier-mâché painted box is constructed from layered papier-mâché with hand-fitted metal fasteners visible on the interior. The inside is left in a rough red finish, typical of utilitarian sealing methods of the time. The hinged dome lid retains its original fittings, though the piece does show signs of age and wear: edge scuffs, paint losses, and surface abrasions consistent with long use. Despite this, the box displays very well.
This is a wonderful antique Indian papier-mâché painted box, both functional and decorative - great in the right decor!
