This is a lovely sweetmeat or bonbon, meant to hold sweets of any kind including candy, sugared fruit or nuts. The piece is made of electroplated silver (silverplate) with an English cut glass insert. The impressed marks on the underside belong to the Sheffield based firm of John Round & Son, founded in 1847 - these particular marks were used from 1880 until 1896. The bamboo form columns on the sides of the piece are in keeping with the Aesthetic Movement of the 1880s. The bottom rim of the piece is engraved with a Greek Key pattern, with the vertical bottom rim decorated with a repouss fleur-de-lys pattern and the lid impressed with a dainty floral pattern. The glass is decorated with vertical linear cuts and floral shapes through the middle. it has a hinged top handle and sits on four bun feet. The piece measures 6 1/4 in diameter across the base and has a height of 4, exclusive of the lid and handle. This bonbon is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, dings or wear - it has been been preserved over the last 140 or so years. This is a lovely antique bonbon - not a common form, very pretty display piece!
