An antique Bohemian black amethyst cased glass vase, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900.
The vase is made of very dark glass which appears black under normal lighting but shows a deep purple or amethyst colour when a strong light is shone through it. The interior is cased in opaque white glass.
It has a flared trumpet form with a bulbous lower body and wide circular foot. The exterior is hand enamelled with trailing flowers and foliage, including white flowers with yellow centres, pale green leaves and stems, and fine gilt foliage. The decoration extends continuously from the lower body onto the flared upper section.
The combination of black amethyst cased glass, applied enamel decoration and the form is characteristic of late 19th-century Bohemian art glass. The vase is unmarked. The workmanship is suggestive of production associated with Harrach or a comparable Bohemian glassworks, but I have not been able to document a specific maker and therefore offer the attribution only as a possibility.
Measurements: 6 1/2" high × 3 7/8" diameter at the top.
Condition: Excellent condition. No chips or cracks noted. The hand-painted decoration is remarkably well preserved. Please refer to the photographs for condition and detail.
A particularly attractive example of late Victorian Bohemian enamelled glass.
