Antique French Glass Tantalus Set Baccarat Crystal Attribution

This is an antique French glass tantalus set, dating to the Napoleon III period, mid-19th century (circa 1855–1870), almost certainly made by Baccarat. The set includes four hand-blown glass decanters with original faceted stoppers and fourteen matching cordial glasses (of the 16 originally present), all decorated with delicate gilt star and dot motifs and gilt rims. The decanters measure 8" in height and the cordial glasses measure 2 5/8" in height.  Unsigned, but I have seen an almost identical set that was identified as being by Baccarat.

The decanters and glasses are housed in an elaborate boulle marquetry case, richly inlaid with brass over red veneer and mounted with gilt bronze ormolu fittings in the neoclassical taste. The case retains its fitted interior with holders for the decanters and glasses. Some of the original brass scrollwork is missing (loose pieces are included for restoration) - see photo, and the box lid is no longer present. Despite these losses, the tantalus still displays beautifully, with its fine gilt glassware intact - some restoration will improve the appearance of the wood case.

Condition The set presents well but is not complete and the case is damaged — the lid is missing, and some brass boulle elements are detached or lost (some loose pieces included). Two cordial glasses are missing from the original complement. Three of the cordials have chips to one edge of its base - two are candidates for sanding, and the third is also not major.  One stopper is currently seized in place and one stopper has a shallow chip at its bottom. Gilt decoration has survived mostly intact. Overall, this set has been very well preserved.

This is a fine example of French luxury decorative arts from the Second Empire period, when elaborate tantalus sets were used for serving cordials and liqueurs in grand salons.

With or without restoration, this will be a gorgeous display piece and the glass is top quality…..
