This is a wonderful antique Aller Vale rooster loving cup.  Aller Vale Pottery of Devon, England was in production from 1881 until 1932. The two-handled vessel features a prominent hand-painted rooster in green, blue, red, and brown glazes with the motto “While I live I’ll crow”. The reverse bears another traditional proverb:

“There’s a saying old and musty
Yet it is ever new
’Tis, never trouble trouble
Till trouble troubles you.”

The interior is glazed in deep red-brown, while the base is impressed Aller Vale Devon England with hand inscribed coding.

Material: Earthenware, hand-painted mottoware glaze

Measurements: 5 3/4”in height, 7 1/2” across its handle, 3 3/4” open diameter

Condition: Displays age-related crazing and light wear consistent with age.  There is a glaze skip on the top rim, original to the making of the piece.  A fissure or deep craze line at one of the upper handles, quite minor. Otherwise, no other cracks, chips or other defect.

This is a nice example of an Aller Vale rooster loving cup - not a common shape, great kitchen display for a country decor!
