Antique 19th Century German Grödnertal Wooden Peg Doll Original Silk Ball Gown

$195.00

This is an antique German Grödnertal wooden peg doll, also known as a Dutch doll or Grödner Gliederpuppe, most likely dating to the mid to late 19th century, although an earlier date is possible.

These traditional wooden dolls originated in the Grödnertal (Val Gardena) region of the Tyrol, an area known for its woodcarving industry. They were widely exported throughout Europe and became particularly popular in England, where they were commonly known as Dutch dolls.

This small example measures just 3 3/4 inches in height and is fashioned of carved and hand-painted wood, with the traditional articulated peg-and-slot limb construction.

The doll has a small oval face with painted black eyes and eyebrows, rosy cheeks and a small mouth. The facial painting shows considerable wear, although the original features remain recognizable.

Of particular interest is the doll's original antique silk ball gown, with its full, bell-shaped skirt and black lace trimming.

The gown is fashioned from cream-coloured silk with a woven floral pattern. The full skirt is arranged in gathered folds, with several bands of black lace decorating the bodice, sleeves and skirt.

The dress has a fitted upper section with a black lace overlay at the neckline and short, wide sleeves edged with lace. The skirt extends outward to form a broad, rounded silhouette characteristic of 19th-century formal dress.

The doll also wears a matching fabric bonnet, gathered into folds around the head and decorated with faded pink and pale blue ribbon.

Beneath the gown are cotton undergarments, including pantaloons. The underside reveals the construction of the skirt, with a reinforced hem that helps maintain the rounded, hoop-skirt silhouette.

The combination of the patterned silk, black lace trimming, bonnet and full skirt is consistent with 19th-century doll clothing. The survival of the original costume is a particularly interesting feature of this small doll.

Measurements:

Overall height: 3 3/4"

Condition: In good condition, showing considerable age-related wear. The painted wooden face has surface wear, paint loss and small areas of discolouration.

One wooden arm is detached but is present and included with the doll. There may also be a missing or damaged foot, although it is difficult to determine whether this is original or the result of damage.

The original silk costume shows age-related deterioration, including areas of silk shattering, splitting and fraying, particularly around the skirt. The black lace has some tears and loose threads.

The costume has been left in its existing condition without attempted restoration. Please examine the photographs carefully for further details.

An example of 19th-century German Grödnertal wooden doll-making, retaining its original silk ball gown with black lace trimming, matching bonnet and layered undergarments. Suitable for a collection of antique dolls, Victorian textiles, miniature costumes or European folk art.
