Antique 1930s Art Deco fabric lady face appliqué with blue eyes, red lips and elaborate blonde curled wig

Antique 1930s Art Deco Fabric Lady Face Appliqué Blonde Wig Boudoir Ornament

$48.00

This is an unusual antique fabric lady's face appliqué with an elaborate blonde wig, most likely dating to the 1930s, possibly as early as the late 1920s, featuring a glamorous, highly stylized female face characteristic of the Art Deco period.

The small face is fashioned from a fine woven fabric, with printed or painted facial features depicting a fashionable young woman with heavily outlined blue eyes, long dark eyelashes, arched eyebrows, rosy cheeks and small, pursed red lips. A tiny beauty mark and a decorative yellow and black earring add to her sophisticated appearance.

The face is framed by an exceptionally elaborate pale blonde wig, fashioned from a fine, lustrous fibre, possibly mohair or another early dollmaking material. The hair is arranged in generous, sculptural rolls and curls, with a broad sweeping wave across the forehead and large, rounded curls framing either side of the face.

The hairstyle is particularly attractive, recalling the carefully arranged waves, rolls and curls associated with fashionable women's hairstyles of the 1930s. The combination of dramatic eye makeup, small painted mouth and elaborate blonde hair gives the piece a wonderfully theatrical, almost Hollywood-inspired appearance.

Unlike a conventional doll head, this piece is almost flat, measuring approximately 1 cm in depth. The face is rigid, apparently mounted over a stiff foundation, possibly cardboard or a similar material, while the elaborate blonde wig remains soft and flexible.

The reverse reveals a shaped fabric backing, gathered woven material and visible stitching securing the wig around the perimeter. The construction suggests that this was originally intended as a decorative appliqué or ornament, designed to be attached to another object rather than incorporated into a conventional three-dimensional doll.

It may originally have adorned a powder-puff holder or another decorative fabric novelty. Such accessories were popular during the early 20th century, particularly in the Art Deco period, when stylized feminine faces and elaborate hairstyles frequently appeared on dressing-table ornaments and boudoir decorations.

Although its precise original purpose has not been established, the piece is an interesting example of early decorative textile work, combining a delicately decorated fabric face with an elaborate, separately fashioned wig.

The original construction appears to have survived, with the hair retaining much of its carefully arranged shape.
