This is a pair of vintage cutaway tails / formal tuxedo tailcoat dating to 1949. These vintage cutaway tails are made in a classic form with padded shoulders, no closure, cut away front with six buttons, two buttons at the back and three buttons at either cuff. The lapels are wide and peaked and finished in black grosgrain. It is fully lined in black satin fabric. Note that there are no pants included, only the vintage cutaway tails.

Label: Tony the Tailor Montreal Tailored Especially For Dr E.H. Bentley Date Mar. 1949 No 1142, Please read further down this page for Dr Bentley’s bio. Tony the Tailor still exists today, located in downtown Montreal and is run by the third generation.
Sizing: There is no size label as these were custom made, and although these vintage cutaway tails should fit a medium size (US size 38), please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 18” across shoulder seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 26” from the shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 19 1/4” long
Chest: 41” around, taken under the arms with a normal gap, 20 1/2” across pit-to-pit
Waist: 38” around
Overall length: 44“ at the back, measured flat from the neck seam
Condition: These vintage cutaway tails are in excellent condition with no wear, tear, soiling, staining or odour.
This is a wonderful pair of vintage cutaway tails in great condition - nice 40s style!
Bio: Edward Horton Bensley was born in Toronto and graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1930, as a gold medallist. He then came to Montreal to take up an internship at the Montreal General Hospital. He eventually became director of the Montreal General Hospital's Department of Metabolism and Toxicology. He also taught biochemistry, medicine and experimental medicine in the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University. During World War II, Major Bensley served with No. 14 Canadian General Hospital. He was a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and a member of numerous societies relating to medical biology and chemistry, in whose journals he published widely. In the 1960s, he consecutively became Associate Dean, Acting Dean and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of McGill. In 1968, he joined the Department of History of Medicine. Dr. Bensley was appointed as Honorary Librarian of the Osler Library in 1979.
