1920s French Art Deco Clutch Purse Leather & Suede w Bakelite Cornered Chrome Frame
This striking 1920s French Art Deco clutch purse comes from a French family estate whose belongings were primarily early 20th-century and Parisian in origin. The purse is a superb example of 1920s French art deco design, combining geometric construction, mixed materials, and the sleek silhouette characteristic of the Deco era.
The exterior is crafted from black leather with insets of black suede, arranged in a stitched chevron / fan pattern typical of the period. The top frame is made of chrome-plated metal, accented at each end with thick black Bakelite (or an early French thermoplastic), giving the bag a distinctive architectural look.
The interior is lined in black fabric and features one of the most desirable details of the period: a swivel-mounted coin purse fixed at the centre interior. These rotating coin compartments were a hallmark of higher-quality French handbags of the 1920s and very early 1930s.
