Antique W.H. Grindley Celtic Flow Blue Gravy Boat & Underplate Set c.1897

This antique gravy boat and matching underplate were produced by W.H. Grindley & Co. of England in their elegant “Celtic” flow blue pattern, introduced in 1897. Rich cobalt blue decoration softly blurs into the white ground in the classic flow blue manner, while delicate gilt accents highlight the moulded edges and handle.

The gravy boat features an ornate scrolling handle, scalloped rim and pedestal base, all characteristic of late Victorian and Edwardian tableware design. The matching underplate echoes the same richly detailed Celtic border pattern and was designed to catch drips while adding a refined presentation to the dining table.

This set forms part of a large service in the Celtic pattern recently acquired.

Condition

Both pieces remain in excellent antique condition. There is one small rough glaze flaw / manufacturing defect along the edge of the underplate (see last close-up photo), really nothing, and otherwise the set shows beautifully.
