Antique Imperial Ripple Carnival Glass Vase Purple Amethyst c.1910 12.25"

This is an antique Imperial Glass Ripple Carnival Glass vase, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1910–1915. Made by the Imperial Glass Company of Bellaire, Ohio, it is a tall example of the company's well-known Ripple pattern in purple/amethyst Carnival Glass.

Imperial was producing its iridescent Carnival Glass by 1910, with contemporary advertisements from that year including the Ripple pattern among the company's offerings. Imperial originally referred to its purple iridescent colour as “Azur.”

The vase is made from deep purple/amethyst glass with an iridescent surface that shows shades of gold, bronze, magenta, blue, turquoise and green depending upon the angle and lighting.

The Ripple pattern consists of a series of raised horizontal ripples encircling the lower body and continuing upward into the long slender neck. The glass was stretched or “swung” during manufacture to produce its tall form. The upper portion opens into a deeply ruffled and flared rim, with the rippled moulding creating a wave-like effect.

The underside has a moulded starburst design, and the dark amethyst colour of the base glass can be clearly seen where the iridescent treatment is absent.

Standing 12 1/4 inches high, this is a taller example of the Ripple vase. Imperial produced Ripple vases in a range of heights, approximately 7 to 13 inches, as the final dimensions depended partly upon how far the individual piece was swung during manufacture.

Condition

The vase is in excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks. The iridescent finish is well preserved and remains colourful and reflective. Any minor irregularities in the glass are consistent with the manufacturing process and age.
