Antique English Staffordshire Pottery Figurine Country Girl with Pail c.1900 Hand Painted Earthenware Figure

Antique English Staffordshire Pottery Figurine Country Girl with Pail c.1900 Hand Painted Earthenware Figure

$75.00

This charming vintage English pottery figurine dates to the early twentieth century and depicts a country girl standing barefoot upon a naturalistic tree stump base while carrying a wooden pail. With one arm raised as though shading her eyes while looking into the distance, the figure captures the romantic rural themes that were popular in Staffordshire decorative pottery during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

The figure is moulded in earthenware and finished with hand-applied polychrome enamels in shades of emerald green, lavender, cream, brown and soft yellow. Delicate floral decoration appears on the lower skirt, while the textured tree trunk and grassy base add depth and character to the composition.

The underside bears an underglaze "Made in England" backstamp together with the painted number 293, indicating manufacture for export during the early twentieth century. While the maker has not been identified, the modelling, glazing and decoration are characteristic of Staffordshire pottery produced during this period.

With its expressive pose, attractive hand-painted decoration and classic English country theme, this figure makes a lovely addition to collections of Staffordshire pottery, English ceramics, cottage décor or early twentieth-century decorative art.

Measurements

Height: 6 1/2 inches

Weight: 300 grams

Condition

Very good condition. I do not observe any chips, cracks or repairs. There is minor surface wear to the base and small manufacturing imperfections (clay lump on raised hand) consistent with early twentieth-century English earthenware.  This is a bit of whitish paint to the front of the base that may or may not be original.  The underside retains later felt pads that may be removed if desired. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
