Antique Bohemian porcelain cabinet plate depicting Odysseus and Calypso from Homer's Odyssey

Antique Bohemian Porcelain Cabinet Plate – Odysseus und Kalypso from Homer's Odyssey

$85.00

This antique porcelain cabinet plate features a detailed mythological scene captioned "Odysseus und Kalypso" (Odysseus and Calypso) from Homer's Odyssey. The central image depicts the legendary Greek hero Odysseus seated upon a rocky shore while the nymph Calypso gestures toward him beneath a dramatic coastal landscape.

The scene is surrounded by an elaborate cobalt blue border highlighted with delicate gilt ornament and an outer band of floral decoration. Open handles complete the form, making this a perfect display piece for a cabinet, wall arrangement, or collection of antique European porcelain.

The decoration appears to combine transfer printing with hand-applied enamel and gilt embellishment, a technique frequently employed by Bohemian porcelain manufacturers during the late nineteenth century. The plate is unmarked aside from the decorator's or pattern number "5476" on the reverse, though examples of this design have been attributed to H&C Schlaggenwald of Bohemia.

A wonderful example of late Victorian decorative porcelain with classical and literary appeal.
