Original 1940 Morin Heights Quebec Skiing Photograph Mary Jane Kevan-Pickens

This is an original 1940 photograph of an early skier at Morin Heights, Quebec, depicting Mary Jane Kevan-Pickens enjoying the Laurentian winter landscape.

The photograph shows Kevan-Pickens on skis, holding her poles and dressed in period ski clothing, including wide trousers, belted jacket, gloves and fur hat. The low camera angle makes this a particularly striking image and an evocative record of recreational skiing in the Laurentians during the early years of the sport's popularity in Quebec.

The reverse is inscribed in ink:

It is also rubber stamped H. R. Pickens Jr. - Pickens appears to have been the Managing Editor of the periodicals Canadian Golfer and Canadian Skier

Mary Jane Kevan, originally of Mount Vernon, New York, married Hilles Ryan Pickens Jr. of Montreal in 1937. The couple had met while students at Middlebury College in Vermont.

Measurement: 7 1/4" × 9 1/2".

The photograph is in good condition for its age. There is considerable staining to the reverse, with two areas having transferred through to the image as brownish spots, along with a lighter area of staining visible toward the right side. Please refer to the photographs for details of condition.

Despite these flaws, the strong composition and appealing subject make this an excellent piece for display, particularly with some careful photographic touch-up or conservation. An interesting original image documenting skiing at Morin Heights in 1940, with both the location and date recorded on the photograph itself.
