Authentic 1920s Black Silk Chiffon Beaded Flapper Dress Art Deco Drop Waist

$395.00

An original authentic 1920s flapper dress, fashioned in delicate black silk chiffon and beautifully embellished with intricate glass beadwork in an elegant Art Deco design.

This lovely example of Jazz Age evening fashion has the characteristic straight, loose-fitting silhouette and dropped waistline of the period. The dress is sleeveless, with broad shoulder straps, a rounded neckline and a draped skirt that falls to approximately mid-calf, depending on the wearer's height.

The black silk chiffon is extensively decorated with vertical rows of tiny glass beads, arranged in alternating straight, zigzag and undulating patterns that extend from the neckline down towards the hem. The beadwork combines dark metallic gunmetal and deep cobalt blue glass beads, creating a subtle contrast that becomes particularly attractive when the dress catches the light.

The most striking feature is the elaborate beaded decoration at the dropped waistline, where a large stylized floral or sunburst motif is flanked by symmetrical scrolling designs. Executed in densely applied gunmetal and cobalt blue beads, this ornamentation extends around the dress, with a corresponding decorative motif at the back.

The skirt falls loosely from the dropped waist, continuing the vertical beaded patterns to the hem. The lightweight, semi-sheer silk chiffon gives the dress a wonderfully fluid appearance, while the weight of the beadwork contributes to its characteristic 1920s drape.

Measurements

No size label. Due to the fragility and style of the dress, and because it must be slipped over the head without any additional openings, we recommend it for a small size. Please refer to the measurements below, keeping these considerations in mind.

Shoulders: 14" across shoulder straps

Bust: 38"

Waist: 36"

Hips: 40"

Overall length: 44", measured from shoulder to bottom hem

Measurements are taken with the garment laid flat and doubled where applicable.

Condition

Very good condition for a beaded silk chiffon dress approximately 100 years old, with some areas requiring attention.

The silk chiffon is delicate, as is typical of garments of this age. There is a hole at the left shoulder that requires patching, along with some slight fraying of the silk threads around the neckline and shoulder edges, as well as in some of the beaded areas. These areas would benefit from careful reinforcement to prevent further deterioration. There may be a few missing beads, but nothing particularly noticeable.

Despite these issues, the dress displays exceptionally well, with its elaborate decorative beadwork largely intact. With appropriate care, conservation of the vulnerable areas and gentle handling, it should remain suitable for occasional wear, although its age and delicate construction must be taken into consideration.

Please examine the photographs carefully, particularly those showing the shoulder damage and beadwork.

A beautiful surviving example of original 1920s fashion — sheer and shimmering, this is sure to be noticed!
