This is a very nice copy of an early twentieth-century Boots edition of The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley, illustrated throughout with the celebrated artwork of Jessie Willcox Smith, one of America's greatest Golden Age illustrators.

Published by Hodder & Stoughton Ltd. for Boots Pure Drug Co., Ltd., Nottingham, this attractive edition was issued shortly after the famous American publication and is generally believed to date to circa 1920. It features one of the most desirable presentations of Smith's illustrations, housed in an elegant deep green cloth binding lavishly decorated in gilt with Tom standing atop a fish amid an underwater landscape.

The book contains twelve tipped-in full-colour plates, all present, accompanied by their original captioned tissue guards. Jessie Willcox Smith's illustrations are among the finest ever produced for The Water Babies, capturing both the whimsical fantasy and gentle sentiment of Kingsley's Victorian classic with her characteristic warmth and painterly style.

The volume measures approximately 8 1/4 inches by 10 inches, contains 240 pages, and remains a wonderfully substantial and handsome edition suitable for both collectors and display.

Condition is very good overall. The green cloth binding remains bright with crisp gilt decoration to both the front cover and spine. There is some staining visible on the front cover, light rubbing at the spine ends, and normal signs of age. The interior is remarkably clean, with only a few occasional light smudges. All twelve tipped-in colour plates are present, along with their tissue guards. The pages remain bright and attractive, making this an especially appealing example for collectors.

A wonderful addition to any collection of Jessie Willcox Smith, Golden Age illustration, antique children's books, or beautifully illustrated classics.
