Antique 1920s Pierrot porcelain half-doll pincushion displayed in decorative vintage cardboard box with lid

Antique 1920s Pierrot Porcelain Half Doll Pincushion Art Deco Flapper Original Box

$225.00

This is an antique Pierrot porcelain half-doll pincushion, most likely dating to the 1920s, featuring a beautifully painted porcelain head, a feather-trimmed costume and unusually long, articulated fabric arms and legs.

The doll depicts a youthful Pierrot or Pierrette character, inspired by the theatrical figures of the French Commedia dell'Arte tradition. Her appearance combines the romantic theatrical styling of Pierrot with the fashionable decorative tastes of the Art Deco period.

The glazed porcelain head has a delicately painted face featuring pale blue eyes, finely arched eyebrows, softly rouged cheeks and small coral-red lips. Her glossy black hair is moulded close to the head, with short, straight bangs across the forehead and a small, raised red ornament at the crown.

The doll wears an elaborate costume in soft champagne, pale green and cream tones. A generous collar of pale yellow-green feather trimming surrounds her neck and upper body, creating a soft, theatrical effect. The front is decorated with small, brightly coloured beads in red, yellow and green, arranged vertically beneath the feather trim.

Her rounded pincushion body is covered in muted green fabric, with a decorative gathered ribbon border edged in black. The back is fashioned in a textured fabric, while the underside is neatly covered with a circular fabric panel.

One of the most unusual features is the doll's long, flexible fabric arms and legs, fashioned in champagne and pale green satin-like material. The limbs terminate in small cream-coloured rings, with clusters of old metal safety pins attached to the ends. These would have served as convenient holders for sewing pins and other small accessories, making the doll both decorative and functional.

The doll is accompanied by an attractive vintage cardboard presentation box, covered in patterned paper with an intricate black floral and geometric design highlighted in metallic gold. The interior retains its old tissue-paper packing.

The doll fits comfortably inside the box, which is the one in which it was acquired. However, it has not been established whether the box is original to the doll, although it appears contemporary to the period. The underside bears an old printed label reading "1/12 doz." and the number "7122", suggesting that the box may originally have formed part of a wholesale or retail packaging arrangement. The box is included with the doll as found.

Although unmarked as far as can be determined, the doll's porcelain head, costume and construction are consistent with European half-doll pincushions of the early 20th century, particularly those associated with German porcelain manufacture.

Measurements:

Height of pincushion doll, excluding extended legs: 4 inches

Overall length, including extended legs: 7 1/4 inches

Condition: Excellent condition as far as can be determined. The porcelain head appears intact, with no apparent chips, cracks or repairs, and the facial painting is beautifully preserved. The feather trimming, fabric costume, decorative beads and articulated limbs remain in remarkably good order for their age, with minor age-related wear. The old safety pins remain attached. The accompanying cardboard box shows expected age-related wear, including rubbing, creasing and wear to the edges and corners. Please examine the photographs carefully.

An especially appealing antique Pierrot pincushion doll, distinguished by its expressive porcelain face, elaborate feather-trimmed costume, unusual elongated limbs and accompanying decorative period box. A wonderful addition to a collection of antique half-dolls, boudoir accessories or early sewing novelties.
