Antique 1918 Noritake Hand Painted Swan Landscape Plate Japan

Dating to 1918, this antique Noritake porcelain handled plate features a finely hand-painted landscape of two white swans on calm water beneath tall trees and a dramatic peach and orange sunset sky. The underside bears the green M within a wreath Noritake / Made in Japan backstamp used during 1918.

The landscape has a soft, almost impressionistic quality, with muted greens, greys and blues contrasting with the warm peach-coloured background. The two small white swans provide the focal point in the foreground.

The plate has an unusual slightly oval circular form with an integral pierced handle at either side. Each handle is picked out in cream and decorated with fine dark red moriage scrollwork, with a small green coloured "jewel" in the centre. A narrow brown border finishes the outer edge.

Condition

The plate is in very good condition with the exception of a couple of small light scratches, which are very minor. The backstamp is poorly applied, but there are no chips or cracks. Please examine the photographs closely as they form an important part of the condition description.

An appealing example of early Noritake hand-painted porcelain, combining a romantic Japanese export landscape with finely formed handles and attractive sunset colouring.
