Native American Wabanaki Ash Splint Lidded Basket Sweetgrass

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a vintage Wabanaki ash splint lidded basket, handwoven with dyed and natural ash splints. The basket measures 8 1/2 inches in height and has a 7 3/4 inch diameter across the lid.

The design features alternating bands of green, rose-pink, and natural ash in checkerboard and plain weave patterns. The lid is decorated with concentric rings of colour and a distinctive star-shaped opening at the centre, bordered by braided trim. Additional braided ash splint details reinforce both the lid and the body, with sturdy braided handles at either side.  There is sweetgrass accenting the centre opening of the lid.  The opening may be there for the purpose of dispensing yarn or perhaps simply for ventilation.

This Wabanaki ash splint lidded basket, is in very good condition, with fading to the dyed splints on the exterior (original colour can be seen on the interior of the basket and underside of the lid) and a few breaks consistent with age and use (see photos), but remains sturdy and displays beautifully.

A fine example of Wabanaki basketry, this piece reflects the artistry of Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Maliseet, or Mi’kmaq makers, who are known for their ash splint weaving traditions. Likely dating to the early–mid 20th century, this Wabanaki ash splint lidded basket, would make a wonderful addition to a collection of Native American or First Nations crafts, or simply as an attractive decorative accent in the right setting.
