Vintage Dunhill Billiard Shell Briar Pipe 251 Group 3 c.1953
$175.00
Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is a vintage Dunhill billiard shell briar pipe, made in England during the early 1950s. It is shape 251, a straight Billiard with a taper stem, one of the most iconic and popular pipe forms.
The shank is stamped:
251 (shape code)
DUNHILL SHELL BRIAR MADE IN ENGLAND PAT. NO 417574/34
(3 in a circle) indicating Group 3 size (medium bowl)
The dating suffix following “Made in England” is faint and no longer legible, but the style of stamping and the presence of the circled group size mark place this example securely in the early 1950s, likely 1953. The stem retains the classic Dunhill white dot.
Condition: This vintage Dunhill billiard shell briar pipe is in very good condition. The rim shows wear and darkening from use, the stem has bite wear to the underside of the bit, and the blast has softened somewhat with age. No burnout, cracks, or repairs noted. The pipe remains structurally sound and is an excellent candidate for a careful cleaning and polish, or can be appreciated in its original state.
