This is a collectible display plate made to commemorate the First World War and featuring the cartoon character Old Bill by Bruce Bairnsfather. Bairnsfather saw action as a machine gunner during WWI and the character and situations portrayed are based on his experiences in the trenches during the war. The plate is marked with A Souvenir of the Great War Commenced Aug 4th 1914 Armistice Nov 11th 1918 Peace Signed June 28th 1919 Sole Makers Grimwades Ltd. Stoke on Trent England. The plate portrays Old Bill trying to cook a meal with another soldier looking on with a caption that reads The Historical Touch Well Alfred ow Are The Cakes?. The cartoon is signed Bruce Bairnsfather. The plate measures 9 in diameter and weighs 13.7 oz. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or wear - even the gold trim is intact. It is impressed 28 on the underside, so I assume that this dates to 1928.
This is a nice collectible Old Bill plate - great addition to a collection!
