This is an attractive footed bowl or tazza made by Maling Pottery during the 1950s as part of their transfer printed Venice Scenes line. The scene is of Venetian buildings with cows and sheep in the foreground and water and a mountain in the background. The bowl is glazed in an oil slick-like lustre. The glaze is lustrous, so depending on how it is angled in the light, will demonstrate purple or green overtones - note how my lighting brought out those particular reflective tones in the photos. The decoration is printed in brown with a bit of hand applied colour.. The bowl is marked on its underside with the Maling Estd 1762 Newcastle-on-Tyne England castle backstamp used between 1924 and 1963. It is hand inscribed with 6532 B. The bowl measures 10 1/2 in diameter across the top with a height of 3 - it weighs 1 pound and 9 ounces. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or scratches - there are some printing defects original to the application of the transfer image, very typical, in addition to some glaze craze lines, again, typical for this type of pottery, and quite minor. Otherwise, this bowl looks great and makes a beautiful display piece.
This is a lovely piece of Maling pottery - the transfer print makes it look like an antique bowl, very nice display piece!
