This is a quality lidded porcelain dish made in France by Apilco, meant to make game bird terrine. Apilco has a long history as porcelain makers in France with roots dating back to 1826. These terrine casserole dishes are made of porcelaine a feu, meant to withstand heat. The lid of this dish features a hand painted bird that I think is a blue headed partridge. The underside is stamped Apilco France Porcelaine a Feu. It is a smaller dish, measuring 6 3/8 by 4 3/4 across the open top, including its flared edge, with a height of 5 1/2 to the top of the birds head - the dish has a depth of 2 1/2 to its edge. It is in very clean condition with no chips, cracks or wear. These appear to no longer be made by Apilco, so this is a nice example to acquire, whether to use or simply to display!
