This is a wonderful Clarice Cliff Sunkissed Fruit salad bowl made by the AJ Wilkinson pottery under their Royal Staffordshire brand name. You can come across the Sunkissed salad plates, but this large bowl appears to be quite difficult to find. The history of AJ Wilkinson is interesting because Clarice Cliff started her career there at the age of 17, after her drawing talent was noticed by the owner Colley Shorter. After working at Wilkinson for a number of years, he sent her to study sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London and then in Paris. He set her up in her own decorating studio and eventually married her. The underside of this bowl is stamped Genuine Handpainted Sunkissed Royal Staffordshire Dinnerware by Clarice Cliff Made in England. Ive been unable to precisely date this mark - definitely after 1936 but is it late 1930s or post-war? The fact that it is hand painted would make me think earlier, but Im not sure. The bowl measures 11 7/8 in diameter and has a height of 3. It is in very condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, scratching or wear but there is a tiny brown mark on the top edge (see last close-up photo) - this could be bleached out if it bothers anyone. This is a hard to find piece - great to have, especially if you have the matching salad plates!
