This is a wonderful tall ewer pitcher that is signed R Mateos, the signature used by Jalisco potter Rigoberto Mateos Ortega (b 1942). This pitcher is made with black clay found in the region surrounding San Bartolo Coyotepec, the production centre of Barro Negro pottery. The traditional firing process yields a smooth black finish and the piece is incised before firing with motifs that are native to the Zapotec culture - the process is known as Barro Negro Esgrafiado. The pitcher measures 13 3/8 in height to the top tip of the spout. It is in very good condition - a small shallow chip to the side of the spout, really minor (see last close-up photo) that could easily be touched up. Aside from a few tiny white specks on the side, really nothing, this is in very good condition and displays beautifully.
This is a striking piece - quality Barro Negro Esgrafiado pottery!
