This is a lovely figural bust or figurine of a lady, made by the Cordey China Company. Cordey was founded in 1942 by artist Boleslaw Cybis with two partners. Cordey marketed their products as giftware of high quality through retailers such as B Altman, Wanamakers and Macys. This bust is hand marked on the underside with 50021, but also impressed into the ceramic with 5009. It is both gold stamped and impressed with Cordey. This lady has coil hair style with four purple flowers on the side of her head, and two similar flowers with leaves at her bust. She measures 5 3/4 height and 3 1/4 by 2 7/8 across the base. She has two condition problems - the applied ceramic to the top of her dress is chipped off at the front and there is a chip to the top leaf on her head. I believe that this is an early piece of Cordey, which went into bankruptcy in 1959 - subsequently, they only produced lamps. The numbers on the underside of this piece were re-assigned to a different form in the 1950s, so Im fairly confident of the 1940s dating. This is a wonderful addition to a Cordey collection or just a pretty display piece on its own!
