This is a sterling silver wax jack hallmarked GH for Harrison Brothers & Howson (George Howson) and with the crown for the Sheffield assay office, the lion for sterling silver quality and the letter q that denotes the year 1933. Wax jacks were primarily popular during the Georgian period and used to produce sealing wax. The rolled wax taper would be unrolled at the top and lit - it would melt onto the small tray at the top and then poured onto the document or envelope that would require sealing. I assume that this was produced as a reproduction of a Georgian model, but I havent seen any similar examples. The piece is well hallmarked with marks appearing on the snuffer, the bottom tray, the removable top tray and the turning handle. The piece measures 3 3/8 by 4 1/4 across the bottom tray and has a height of 4 3/8 to the top of the top tray. The piece weighs 192 grams or 6.75 oz. It is in very good condition - needs a more thorough cleaning and polishing than I was able to perform but there is no denting or pronounced wear. Although not Georgian, these wax jacks are not common - wonderful desktop display piece!
