This is a pair of blue and white plates made by Samuel Barker & Sons of the Don Pottery. The plates are decorated in the Wild Rose pattern, which features a scene of Nuneham Courtenay taken from a print of Oxfordshire. Samuel Barker was active from 1851 until 1893. Only one of the plates is marked on its underside with the Barker shield mark while the other is unmarked. Each plate measures 10 in diameter and together they weigh 2 lbs and 8 oz. Both are in very good condition except that the marked one has a small chip on the underside base ring and the unmarked one has a tight hairline on the underside that does not appear to migrate to the top (see last close-up photos). These are Ironstone China plates and some glaze crazing is visible in the close-ups, but not at all visible under normal viewing. Both display very well and would make lovely wall hangings. Nice additions to a collection of blue and white china!
