This is a Royal Doulton ashtray made of a stoneware type of pottery. The ashtray is decorated around its upper body with a repeating head motif in a light blue colour while the rest of the piece is glazed in a mottled brown. The piece is stamped with the number 7324 on the underside and with the artists monogram - I havent been able to positively identify the artist. The Royal Doulton lion backstamp is the version used between 1901 and 1922. The piece measures 4 3/8 in diameter across its underside and 4 in height and is heavy for its size, weighing 1 lb and 15 oz. It has a couple of hairlines and a shallow edge chip at one of its openings, but being stoneware, these dont affect the piece much, The hairlines are much more visible in the photos than in real life and when I tap on the piece, I dont not notice any hollow sound. The piece displays very well.
Despite the hairlines, this is nice addition to a Royal Doulton collection, or just a lovely display piece, too nice to use as an ashtray - this is a nice early example of Royal Doulton, displaying design aspects of Doulton Lambeth!
