This is a set of three antique stereoview photos produced by Underwood & Underwood, circa 1902. One stereo view pictures Mont Pele erupting and the other two show some of the destruction caused by the eruption. The eruption view is sepia toned, while the other two are silver gelatin, Although there had been signs of eruption for some weeks, no one took it seriously as Mont Peles nue ardente eruption was little understood and rather rare as most know eruptions were, up to that time, slow moving. This eruption was similar to that of Krakatoa (1883), Vesuvius (79 AD), Thera (circa 1450 BC), but was so devastating that loss of life was in the thousands, greater than the four previous nue ardente eruptions combined. All three cards are in very good condition - they have a vertical curve, but I think that this is normal for stereoviews. Each measures 3 1/2 by 7. These are wonderful collectible stereoviews.
