This is a first American edition of the book They by Rudyard Kipling, published by Doubleday, Page & Co. in 1906. It has a pictorial front that is gold stamped with the title and authors name. The front endleaf is inscribed with the original owners name and date of 1906. The book itself is in good condition with stains on the exterior (see photos), faded stamping on the spine, a few small marks on the interior, very minor, and the coloured illustration on page 47 is partially detached from the spine. Unusual book in that only the right hand pages are printed and numbered, so although there are 80 pages of text including illustrations, there are in essence 160 pages, 80 of them blank. Otherwise, the binding is secure and the book is still very legible - if you could somehow clean the stains on the cover and re-secure page 47, you would have a nice copy of this book.
They is considered central to Kiplings body of work, autobiographical in nature in that it explores the themes of healing and the supernatural, following the loss of Kiplings daughter Josephine in 1899. Wonderful addition to a collection of Kipling books..
