This is a 1920s or 30s era English straw boater hat, an important mens fashion accent during the early 20th century. This straw boater hat was made by Dunn & Co of London and is beautifully made with thick, rigid straw. Dunn & Co was founded in 1887 by George Arthur Dunn, who started by selling hats on the streets of Birmingham and 40 years later had 200 stores. The lining of this straw boater hat is stamped “Dunn & Co London Branches Throughout the United Kingdom”. The size tag on the sweatband reads 7, but the one under the sweatband reads 7 1/4. I assume that this is the difference between British and American sizing, but this fits my husband who wears a 7 1/8. The interior dimensions of the opening are 6 1/4” by 7 7/8” and the sweatband measures 22 1/4” around, so this should fit about a size 7 1/8. This straw boater hat is in very clean condition - there are two pieces of straw that are sticking up a bit at the top edge of the crown above the bow (see photo), and a minor edge bump at the back crown top edge, really insignificant, but mentioned in the interest of full disclosure.
