This is a fabulous Frank Olive straw hat made in a very wide brimmed style.  The straw is woven with a few interspersed bands in metallic silver and gold and the straw is also in slightly different tones.  The opening of the hat has a pink grosgrain sweatband that measures 20 7/8” around - my hat sizing tool indicates a size 6 3/4, but the hat is supposed to sit on the back crown of the head, so should fit a size 6 7/8 or 7.  The hat measures 20” in diameter and the brim has a width of 6 3/4”.  It is in very good condition with no wear, tear or soiling.

Age: 1970s

Label: From My Private Collection Frank Olive.  Frank Olive (1929-1995) was a New York based milliner who started making hats during the 1950s on advice given to him by Norman Norell.  He initially supplied custom made hats to Chandra and to Saks 5th Avenue, but the costs involved in hand making hats caused him to turn to more cost effective production methods,  During the 60s, he supplied hats to fashion houses such as Oscar de la Renta and Pauline Trigere and other Seventh Avenue design houses, but opened “Frank Olive’s World” in 1971 with the goal of wider distribution.  Frank Olive produced hats under four different labels as well as a budget line under a fifth label, but the label on this hat, “From My Private Collection”, was his most expensive line, and I believe that hats with this label were “one of a kind” unique models.

This is an exceptional quality Frank Olive hat.....striking form that is sure to be noticed!
