This is a lovely black chiffon cocktail dress dating to the early 1960s, maybe late 1950s.  The ILGWU union label that is affixed to the interior was in use from 1955 until 1963.  The label reads “Carol Robins” with a graphic of a cocktail glass, so definitely, this dress was meant for cocktail parties.  Carol Robins appears to have been a popular brand for party dresses through the 1950s and 60s, but I haven’t found any information on the company.

The dress has a high rounded neckline, short sleeves and is made in a knee length.  It is constructed with a semi-transparent black chiffon fabric over a rayon taffeta base.  The top of the base taffeta lining is cut in a pointed zig-zag design, front and back, to wonderful effect.  It has two spaghetti straps.  The upper bodice, back and sleeves are chiffon only.   The dress has a defined waistline and the skirt is gathered in tucks below the waist so that the skirt falls in drapes.  The chiffon at the upper back hooks at the neckline and forms a peek-a-boo gap.  The dress closes at the back with a fine tooth metal zipper.

Sizing: No size is indicated, but according to my measurements, this should fit a extra small or small size - please rely on the following measurements for fit:

Bust:  33” around, taken under the arms

Waist:  24” around

Hips:  46” around, meant to fall loosely

Overall length:  39", measured flat from the top of the spaghetti straps to the hemline

Condition:  It is in very good, clean condition with no wear, tear, holes, stains or odors.  This dress has been very well cared for and stored over the years.

This is a gorgeous dress - sophisticated look, sure to be noticed!
