This is an original 19th-century photographic portrait of a young soldier identified as “E. S. Baker – 22 years”, captured during the Crimean War era (1853–1856). The piece was discovered in Canada, though the uniform and styling suggest a British officer—possibly stationed in a colonial posting or resettled post-service or simply in Canada because it was passed down through the family.

Key Features:

Inscription: Handwritten on the reverse in pencil, “E. S. Baker 22 yrs”.

Photo dimensions: Trimmed to 3 3/8″ × 5 1/4″, with visible loss to the original bottom margin where writing once appeared.

Frame: Simple and period-appropriate metal frame (likely chromed tin), measuring 3 7/8″ × 5 7/8″.

Uniform: Full dress with ornate embroidered cuffs, shoulder sash, and a visible sidearm—consistent with British Army officers of the mid-1850s, especially during the Crimean campaign.

Headgear: The plumed shako cap on the table is consistent with British cavalry or artillery units of the time.

Historical Significance:
The Crimean War marked a turning point in British military history, introducing modern war reporting, battlefield photography, and iconic figures like Florence Nightingale. While we have not yet positively identified E. S. Baker in military rolls, the portrait’s uniform places him within this critical military period.

Condition Notes:

Photo shows a horizontal crease or repair, edge wear, and handling marks.

Some damage to the lower margin, though the image retains strong period character.

Frame has oxidation but remains intact and stable for display.

This rare mid 19th century soldier’s portrait offers a window into a pivotal era in British imperial history. The youthful officer, crisply dressed in his Crimean-era uniform, invites further research.   Despite the condition, an early and collectible military photo....
