This is a wonderful 1920s era mens raccoon fur coat, a must-have fashion popular with Ivy League college students during the 20s and 30s.  This one is an early example - you can tell by the covered peg buttons and loops, the quilted lining and the leather armpit guards and neck chain.  In fact, I’m wondering if this might pre-date the 20s.  In any case, this is the type of coat that young men would wear to football games and other activities.  It is made with a rounded shawl collar, has ten buttons arranged in a double breasted style and has a flapped pocket at either side.  It also has an interior fur trimmed pocket.   The neck can be worn open or closed and the collar can be worn up or down (see photos).

Label: No label.  This would have been furrier made.

Sizing: No size is indicated, but this should fit a large size, probably a US size 42/44 - please rely on the following measurements for fit (compare measurements with a similar coat that you presently own or to your own body measurements, taking the cut of the garment and thickness of fur into account):

Shoulders: 21” across from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeves: 27 1/2” from the shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeve inseam: 19”

Chest:  50” around, taken under the arms

Waist:  50” around

Overall length:  49”, measured flat

Condition:  It is in very good condition, especially considering its age.  Raccoon tends to be a fairly robust fur - there are no splits or repairs to the fur pelts.  There is some wear to the quilted lining along the hemline (see last close-up photo) and one other wear spot to the lining at the upper side - because the fabric is quilted the wear won’t spread and is fairly minor in any case.  The leather at the edge of the cuffs has tiny cracks/splits, but again, this is minor and just a function of age.  Really, this coat is so well constructed, it should last many years with common sense care.  The coat was stored in a basement for close to 100 years, so there was a musty smell that I’ve almost eliminated by airing the coat.  It may need a bit more airing to completely get rid of any smell, but I’ll keep on airing it and I will update the listing once that it is gone.

This is a rather rare coat - I don’t think that too many of these authentic 20s era raccoon coats have survived to today.  Great coat to wear to a football game if you want to recreate the good old days!
