This is a wonderful sterling silver and enamel brooch by master jeweller Walter Schluep.  Schluep was trained in Switzerland and made his home at the age of 22 in Montreal in 1954, where he worked with Gabriel Lucas, alongside other European trained jewellers, including Hans Gehrig.  He opened his own store and workshop in 1964 and gained a reputation to the point that his work was displayed at the Canadian pavilion at Expo 67.  He considered himself more of an artist than a jeweller, working in miniature, and was influenced by the pop art movement, particularly Andy Warhol.  That influence can be seen in this whimsical piece, which is made in an anthropomorphous form with blue eyes and red heart on a black enamel background in a sterling silver setting - the number 5 appears in the centre.  The piece measures 1 1/2” in width and 2” in height.  The back of the piece is stamped “Schluep Sterling” with the W logo and hand scratched with inventory numbers.

Walter Schluep sadly passed away in 2016 at the age of 84.  This is a wonderful example of his work!
