Antique Sewing Machine Advertising Fan Ad New Williams 1901 Montreal Advertisement

This is an antique hand fan advertising New Williams Sewing Machines. New Williams machines were made in Montreal by the Williams Mfg. Co., which was a direct competitor to the Singer Sewing Machine Co. The litho on the paper fan has an illustration that encompasses symbols of the British Empire, including England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada and Australia. A star to the right has text around it that reads Heavens Light Our Guide and beneath the Union Jack is text that reads Unum Imperium. An image of a New Williams machine is superimposed on the Union Jack. Text at the bottom of the fan reads The New Williams Stands for Unity Strength and Happiness in the Home., The Williams Mfg. co., Limited, Montreal, P.Q.. In fine print below is written Entered according to Act of Parliament of Canada in the year 1901, by A.W. Dingman, Toronto at the Department of Agriculture. The Toronto Lithographing Co. Limited. The name of A.W. Dingman is interesting, because in 1902 he went to Alberta and became a famous Canadian oil man, discovering the Dingman No 1 oil well that started the first Alberta oil rush. The back of the fan is stamped with Spencer Matheson Successors to the late C.M. Ball Dealer in Pianos, Organs and Sewing Machines (Several Makes & Styles carried in Stock) Old Instruments and Machines taken in exchange for new ones. Call or Write For Prices. It is in very good condition except for a bit of the wood broken off at the bottom and some yellowish staining to the lower left and upper right - otherwise, this has been very well preserved. This is a rare and quite wonderful early sewing collectible - being Canadian, not too many would have been made. Guaranteed old and original - a nice piece advertising early Canadian manufacturing!
