This is a 1970s vintage Jean Muir dress made under her “Jean Muir London” label.  This dress is made of a very vibrant purple jersey in 100% viscose, a fabric often used by Muir.  Like most Muir designs, the dress has a comfortable fluidity to its form.  It features an interesting high collar that is worn folded down and the dress does up with covered buttons at the upper left.  The dress has leg o’ mutton styled sleeves with slit cuffs.  The collar, opening and cuffs are all decorated with red stitching.  There is a pocket built into either side seam. The dress is unlined and has some translucence to it.  It is cut with a flare down to the hemline so that the skirt of the dress falls in drapes.  The fabric of the dress has good weight and falls beautifully, again, typical of Jean Muir, as the fall and movement of the garment was an important aspect of her designs.

Label: Jean Muir London

Sizing: The size tag is missing, but it should fit a medium size - please note the following measurements:

Shoulders:  13” between seams, but your shoulder cap would fit into the top of the sleeve

Sleeves:  27” from the shoulder seam, 33 1/2” long from the mid-neck seam

Sleeve inseam:  23 1/2”

Bust: 36” around, taken under the armpits

Waist: 40” around

Hips:  46” around

Length: 47”, measured flat at the back from the neck

Condition: The left armpit has discolouration on the interior (see last close-up photo) - there is a slight pinkish cast in a small area on the exterior, but this is barely perceptible.  The right armpit has very slight discolouration on the interior only.  Otherwise, this Jean Muir dress is in very good condition with no other wear, tear, staining or odour.

This is a wonderful example of Jean Muir design in a fabulously striking colour!

Jean Muir is considered one of Britain’s greatest fashion designers.  She studied fashion sketching at St Martin’s School of Art while working at Liberty, and went on to work at Jacqmar and then Jaeger.  After designing for the Jane & Jane label for four years, she started a label under her own Jean Muir brand in 1966.
